Much ado about nothing: पुनरागत vs. समागत

Shri Phadnis writes…

“Shri Oak says in some edition it is written as  समागत (instead of पुनरागत).  Assuming one letter shortage her is made up by ‘cha’ the line becomes – Pushyen sampraptosmi, shravane cha समागत:.  Then Shri Oak breaks the word as समा and गत: and says that  समा means assembly and गत: means returned! (On hearing, I have returned on Pushya, to this assembly of you people).  Really? Only Shri Oak can find such meaning for the words.”

My Response…

I referred to at least 3 different Sanskrit-English dictionaries when I was writing my book – When did the Mahabharata War Happen?: The Mystery of Arundhati.

Shri Phadnis’s objection about समागत is digression and waste of time from the main issue he is discussing – Balarama Tirthayatra.  This is because choice of पुनरागत or समागत does not change the meaning of the Mahabharata reference.  Both words mean ‘returned‘.

Only reason I mentioned समागत is because I was looking for alternate readings of this Mahabharata reference which is not been explained satisfactorily by ANYONE, to this day..

And while I can not recall which specific dictionaries I referred to, I looked for Sanskrit-English online dictionaries, today, and landed on one by Prof. Apate.

This is what showed up when I typed the word – समागत

  1. Shri. Oak, you only in your book have broken the word समागतः as समा + गतः and attributed the meanings ‘gathering’ and ‘returned’ to the two parts! I only pointed out that Sanskrit Crammer does not work that way. I am perfectly aware that Samagatah and Punaragatah mean the same. I certainly have a right to criticize yours and Dr. Vartak’s tendency to pull sanskrit words helter – scelter. Even after replacing the word संप्रयातोस्मि with संप्राप्तोस्मि and पुनरागतः with समागतः you are not able to reverse the meaning you wanted!

  2. Not only you have a right to criticize whatever you consider worthy of it, but also I am thankful for your efforts. Road of science is that of conjectures/theories, devising tests, observations, interpretations, testing and more testing, alternate proposals and of course ‘Rational criticism and discussion’. This involves back and forth, not unlike a tennis game. In short, all is well.
